Kuvataiteilija Marja Purto kiinnostui taiteilija- kirjasta taideopintojensa loppuvaiheessa 1990-luvulla. Jo pitkään sitä ennen hän oli tuntenut viehtymystä paitsi perinteiseen kirjaan myös kortistoihin, koteloihin,laatikoi- hin, kääröihin jne. Opintojen jälkeistä kirjatuo- tantoa ei kuitenkaan ole toistaiseksi esitelty näyttelyissä. Sen sijaan hän on ollut toteut- tamassa useita Anu Torikan näyttelyjen johdannoiksi koottuja kirjaeoksia. Kirjaston- hoitajana ja graafisenasuunnittelijana Marjalla on aivan erityinen suhde kirjaan – myös taiteilijakirjaan: kirja edustaa hänelle täydellistä muotoa, joka esineenä vetoaa aivoihin ja aisteihin. Kirja on järjestystä, kaaoksen hallintaa; kirja on aikakone, meno- ja paluulippu; kirja on uusi maailma, jotakin muuta kuin oma maailmasi….

Visual artist Marja Purto became interested in artist’s books in the fi nal stages of her art studies in the 1990s. Long before this she had felt the attraction not only of the traditional book, but card fi les, cases, boxes, wrappings, etc. The book production of her post-art school years has not yet been exhibited – she has, however, executed several of the collected book works introducing Anu Torikka’s shows. As a librarian and graphic designer Marja has a rather special relationship to the book – the artist’s book as well: for her it represents the perfect form, where as an object it fascinates the brain and senses. The book is organization, control of chaos; it is a time machine, a return ticket; a new world, something other than your own world.
